Hello Ismael,

I have a few questions for you about the Minelab lead acid batteries.

1) I have been using a Radio Shack 3amp AC/DC convertor for years, so I can use the Minelab 12v car charger at home. Sometimes I leave the Minelab lead acid batteries on the 12v charger for days, and even weeks. I'm sure this does no harm to them, if anything I would think it would help them. Just wanted to hear your opinion on leaving the batteries on the charger for a long period of time. Keep in mind, this is the 12v Minelab Smart Charger, not the Wall Charger that is notorious for burning up batteries.

2) Have you experienced any problems with the Bond 6v 12ah batteries from Minelab? I have 3 Bond batteries sitting here from customers within the last couple of months. Curious if the Bond make is not as good as the other ones they use. Seems as if there are more problems with the Bond batteries through Minelab than any other. Any ideas? Any way to repair them, or are they junk now?

Thanks for all the help in the past. Hope to see you over on my forums more often when you get some free time. I'm sure most really appreicate your hard work and effort to educate others about all the mods and stuff.

Take care mate,

Hi Rob,

I would imagine that using the 12V Minelabs charger for long periods wouldn't do any harm but an old trick to keep batteries (in storage) healthy was to put a small wattage globe in series with a charger to only allow a trickle charge. I am not familiar with the Bond battery from Minelabs so can't help you there. I also have had a run with batteries over the past 6 months having 3 that read 6.xV but when under load drop to less than 3V! I have an article somewhere about bringing old batteries back to life including SLA types and will try to dig it up and post the article, but the gist was this: You open the top of the battery (on SLA types you will see a small outline of the cover that is either glued or pressed in) and remove the plugs (generally rubber in my experience) and remove old fluid (if any) add something like battery boost liquid (for car batteries) or proper battery acid to the normal level. You then put the battery on a very slow charge over a week or so (using the globe example I said above). This article said that he had revived old car batteries to a usuable state doing this and he was talking of batteries that had been left for months and years even!

Hope that this helps a little. I must admit I have only revived one SLA battery doing this. When I find the article I will let you know.

Hello Ismael,

Thanks for the reply back. I would love to see that article you wrote about bringing old batteries back to life. When you find it let me know, but don't kill yourself looking for it.

I usually go out prospecting every 2-3 days, and just leave the battery on the 12v car charger during the days I work. I have not had any problems in the past with this method, but was curious if there was some type of long-term damage that could occur. I seriously doubt it, but figured you would know much more.

Thanks for all your help!
