Hints for GPM

Hints for GPM was created by Ismael
I have a few minutes to pass on some of my own and other GPM users hints. This will be on going thread so might be an idea to subscribe to it.

On my last trip I was testing a mod to tow a coil behind an ATC that I have, although it worked fine I found that I could do almost as well with the standard GPM mod in a similar way so for those that have the GPM so far the tests do not reveal much of a diferrence but I only managed to test it on rough ground that gave plenty of falsing (hitting rocks, sticks, stumps and you name it! )and also for only a couple of hours. Here is how to make your detector work well in towing situations:

  • The first thing I should mention is I have found that it is better practice to put the detector down on the sled away from the bike and have an extended power cable rather than an extended coil lead. This gets rid of any electrical interference from the bike and also you have no losses that may happen with extended coil leads. Remember though to keep the control box secure and protected as well and at least the same distance from the coil as when you walk with a detector.

  • Next I was using a 18\" Mono & 18 DD for these tests. I put the frequency control to #3 and the balance switch to channel 1. I then GB the coil as best as I could.

  • I wound up the gain (GPM) flat out on channel 1 and also ran at maximum voltage.

  • I found that I could detect well anything above 5gms at depths averaging from 6 - 8\" and above at speeds varying from between 5-15 kmh! The same with the DD. The noise was bearable and the detector certainly found the targets easily. I hope to do more testing soon especially on salt lakes. With the \"Salt Mod\" I found that it wasn't a significant difference and from other tests we cannot run higher voltages otherwise the receive front end on the detector blows! I wanted to test this on my machine (Higher voltage) but I left my front end IC's at home so didn't want to take the chance. The front end blew on my mates detector a couple of weeks prior to my tests after around 20 minutes and we put it down to the higher voltage. My test at standard voltage ran okay for around 3 times the time it took to blow my mates detector and still was going okay.

So that is the first instalment on some hints. This is a good one as most of the professionals I have done mods for use a GP for the towing because of the 2000 not having the quietness like the GP when towing coils. I hope that some of you that have tried to tow coils will try this set up and have better luck

    See you all later.
